In 1816, George Wille (1738-1817), his son Charles (1768-1849), Charles's brother-in-law Nehemiah Wimble (1778-1843) & George Adams, purchased a plot of land from Charles Wille on which the Tabernacle Chapel, Lewes, was later built. Trustees were appointed by the surviving purchasers in 1829. They included Charles Wille (1768-1849), Nehemiah Wimble (1778-1843), Arthur Morris (1800-1852) and James Berry (1796-1877, Charles Wille the younger's brother-in-law).
Details of the Tabernacle Chapel, Lewes.
From 'A History of Lewes', Walter H. Godfrey, 1971, published by the Lewes Borough Council;
"...In 1830 William IV and Queen Adelaide were entertained with great ceremony at The Friars by Mr.Nehemiah Wimble, who had a fine
armorial dinner service made in commemoration of the event..." "...Between the east gate and the bridge over the river was formerly a
House of Grey Friars, whose church and cloister stood on the south of the street, halfway between the town wall and the river. After the
dissolution it passed to John Kyme, M.P. for Lewes in 1554, then his niece, and then her sister's family. In the 18th century the building
was refashioned into a stately house of the period, and here Sir Ferdinando Poole, 'one of the best patrons and staunchest supporters of
the turf', lived, and entertained the Prince Regent. Here also in 1830 Mr.Nehemiah Wimble gave a banquet to King William IV and Queen
Adelaide when they visited Lewes. The house was demolished in 1846 when the railway came, and all vestiges of the Grey Friars have been
swept away..."
And, with reference to Anne of Cleves House; "...Here also may be seen the handsome service of Worcester china made for Nehemiah Wimble,
of The Friars, Lewes, to commemorate the visit of William IV and Queen Adelaide to Lewes in 1830..."
Regarding King William IV's visit in 'Royal Visitors to Sussex'; "...But he and the Queen could cope quite happily with royal ceremonial
when they had to. And there was plenty of it when they visited Lewes on October 22, 1830, to lunch at the Friars, with members of the council.
The road from Brighton was decorated with flowers, streamers and evergreens and people attending the quarter sessions from other parts of the
county joined the welcoming crowd, as the court sitting was adjourned for that day from 4 pm."
"Hundreds of schoolchildren were assembled at the entrance to the town from midday onwards and members of local societies lined each side
of the road from St.Anne's Church to the Friars - a house at the bottom of School Hill which was demolished in 1845 to make way for the railway.
It belonged to Nehemiah Wimble, an ironmonger who was a Headborough of Lewes from 1820 to 1831. The royal salute was fired from the cannon on
Brack Mount as the Union Jack was unfurled on the castle. Royal standards were hoisted on the County Hall, the Market Tower and the Friars and
Sir John Shelley, MP, with the chief magistrates and town constables, rode out to greet the royal party."
"...before leaving, the King wanted to confer a knighthood on his host but Nehemiah Wimble asked to be excused the honour, saying that he
wished to die 'plain Mr.Wimble'. He did, however, accept as an augmentation to his coat of arms, the lion of England. Such augmentations were
in the personal gift of the sovereign and were usually for acts of bravery or for outstanding deeds. The Earl of Surrey received one at
Flodden, the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim and Nelson at the Battle of the Nile and, posthumously, after Trafalgar. Perhaps on this occasion
the sovereign had enjoyed an outstanding buffet lunch."
"The visit to Lewes was recorded for posterity by Royal Academician Archibald Archer who spent two years painting accurate portraits of
the Lewes and county notables attending the King in front of the Friars. This ten foot by eight foot oil painting hangs, with a numbered key
to the people it portrays, in the assembly room of Lewes Town Hall. A similar scene was painted by watercolourist Thomas Henwood and shows
the procession of carriages descending School Hill and cheering citizens on the rooftop of what is now the National Westminster Bank."
"Other souvenirs of the occasion survive. Among the Corporation plate is the King William Cup, purchased from the fund raised for the
reception of the sovereign, and in Anne of Cleves Museum in Southover is the Royal Worcester tea and coffee service Nehemiah Wimble had made
to commemorate the honour conferred on him. His coat of arms, with its augmentation, is on the plates and saucers."
This dinner service was displayed in a glass-fronted cabinet in the front room of 101 Enys Road, Eastbourne in the 1950s, which would suggest that it had passed to Ellen I. Gilbert (1857-1951), whose mother's mother was Nehemiah Wimble's sister Mary (1769-1831), although why it should pass down this branch of the family rather than to Nehemiah's children is a mystery. From the memory of H.R.Gilbert it was green and white with a coat of arms featuring the Lion of England, two sea shells and a 'Wimble' (an old fashioned name for a 'brace and bit' winding tool used by thatchers, or for winding straw to make rope) which was the Wimble family emblem.
The Wimble coat of arms, showing the Lion of England granted by King William, and the thatcher's tool ("Wimble") visible in the lower red triangle.
In Mary Gilbert's diary for 4 August 1960 (when she was still living at 101 Enys Road) she wrots; "Elsie, Dick and Hilary [Gilbert] came to supper. We had our family green china out for the occasion." This is almost certainly the same service, and was probably the last time it was ever used. It was probably donated to Anne of Cleve's House via the Sussex Archaeological Society on the recommendation of Richard Gilbert when the Gilbert sisters moved to 56 Milton Road, Eastbourne, less than a month later in 1960.
Died; 12 December 1843. On Nehemiah's death his affairs went into chancery.
As one of the original Trustees of Lewes Tabernacle, Nehemiah had loaned the Trust £600 to fund its construction. His death was followed by a claim by his executors to the Trust for the repayment of the money he had contributed. Although he had enjoyed considerable prestige in Lewes, becoming Junior Constable in 1835 and Senior Constable in 1840, his business affairs had deteriorated. To pay his debts his executors were forced to sell his property. The home of the Wimbles, the Friars, was sold to the Railway Company and pulled down. Mrs Wimble went to live with her niece, Mrs Arthur Morris.
An engraving of the Friars (from the Sussex County Magazine), and an illustration of the Wimble coat of arms are in H R Gilbert's records.
