From documents held at E.Sussex Record Office; "In 1727 Arthur Morris received two grants of waste (1 and 2 below) from the lords
of the Manor of Lewes Borough and a further grant in 1729; numbers 1 and 3 are shown on a plan in the abstract of title (HIL/6/28C/15)
(1) Small parcel of waste lying near a place the Green Wall Walk in All Saints containing, in length 8 perches from a stable of Thomas
Brown, gentleman, from the south to the north and in breadth 1 perch from the east to the west (E: lands of Thomas Brown; W: road).
(2) Small parcel of waste upon which a workshop was lately erected, four perches long and one perch wide.
(3) Parcel of waste 35 perches long and two perches wide called the Green Wall leading from the Town Ditch to the tanyard of Richard Puxty
Morris, described as mason, died in 1744 leaving (1) above (now with a house on it) and (2) to his wife Mary for life, with the remainder to
their son John. Morris bequeathed the two houses which had been built on tenement (3) above to his son Benjamin, and the residue of the
tenement to his wife Mary with remainder to their son John, along with his freehold house in All Saints (HIL/6/28C/1). Mary Morris died
in 1771 and since Benjamin had died in 1746 the two houses on tenement (3) went to his daughter Frances, on whose death in 1784 they passed
to her uncle John, thus re-uniting the title of all three tenements (HIL/6/28C/15).
John Morris died in 1792 and all three tenements passed to his nephew John, whose uncle Joseph released his right to them in 1793
(HIL/6/28C/3).
At this date (1) above was described as containing a stone yard, stonemason's warehouses and workshops and two houses, (2) above as containing
a messuage where a workshop called a dyehouse had previously stood, and (3) above as containing a third messuage lately erected. The freehold
messuage passed to John's wife Elizabeth for life, with remainder to his nephew John (HIL/6/28C/15).
John Morris sold a small part of (1) above to Thomas Rickman in 1795 (ADA 160 page 162), two parts of (3) above to Thomas Rickman and John
Hope in 1809, and another part of (3) above to George Stanford in 1813 (see plan in HIL/6/28C/15).
In 1795 and 1809 Morris had bought pieces of land on the east of the stoneyard, parts of Upper Brook, from Thomas Rickman (HIL/6/28C/4-5,
6/28C/16 and map in 6/28C/15). The abstract traces the title of Upper Brook, together with the messuage in All Saints of which it was part,
to 1758 (HIL/6/28C/16).
In 1816 John Morris (now of Ryders Wells in South Malling) and William Richardson of Lewes entered an agreement about a shop which Richardson
had built on the wall of Morris's stoneyard (HIL/6/28C/6). John Morris died in 1822, having devised his estates to his executors in trust to
sell. Part of the residue of (3) above, (now described as messuage, buildings and yard, adjoining part of the tenement sold to George Stanford
in 1813 on the north) and part of the residue of (1) above, (the two messuages adjoining the above messuage on the south) and the stoneyard
(part of the lot (5) on map in 6/28C/15), were sold to Latter Parsons of Lewes, stonemason (HIL/6/28C/7-8). The remainder of the residue of (1)
above, partly used as a stoneyard and partly occupied by part of a smith's shop, and the remainder of the residue of (3) above, (three messuages
and a garden, lot (6) on map in 6/28C/15), were sold to William Attwood (HIL/6/28C/9-10). The freehold land bought from Rickman in 1795 and
1809 was divided; the bulk was sold to Latter Parsons (HIL/6/28C/11-13), but a small part (lot 4), containing the other part of the smith's
