Married; Sarah Weller (1720-1789), 25 August 1744, St Anne's, Lewes. Joseph was of All Saints, Sarah was of St Anne's.
Children; John (1745-1822), Joseph (1747-1751), Stephen (1750-1751), Joseph (1752-1826), Sarah (1756-18??), and others?
Occupation; Butcher of Lewes. High Constable of Lewes in 1754 and 1769.
Died; 1795, Lewes, aged 78.
Buried; 17 December 1795 at All Saints, Lewes.

1720-1789 SARAH MORRIS (nee WELLER)

Born; 1720, Ewhurst, Sussex
Baptised; 29 March 1730, Ewhurst, Sussex.
Married; Joseph Morris (1717-1795) on 25 August 1744, St Anne's, Lewes. Joseph was of All Saints, Sarah was of St Anne's.
Children; John (1745-1822), Joseph (1747-1751), Stephen (1750-1751), Joseph (1752-1826), Sarah (1756-18??), and others?
Died; 1789, Lewes, Sussex.
Buried; 1 March 1789, All Saints, Lewes.

1745-1822 JOHN MORRIS

Born; 14 May 1745.
Parents: Joseph Morris (1717-1795) = Sarah Weller (1720-1789)
Married: (1) Mary Boys of Ashcombe (1754-1791)
Children: Ann (17??-1823), Sophia (17??-1828), James (1788-1861)
Married: (2) Ann Mann of Burwash (176?-1847). Note that Ann's sister married a Boys. Any relation to John's first wife?
Children; David (1794-1855), Frances (1797-1886), Arthur (1800-1852), Daniel (1802-1869), Samuel (1803-1873), Esther (1807-1859)

High Constable of Lewes 1783 (or 1785?).
Acquired the land of 'Ryders Well', Wellingham, Ringmer from William Kempe for £1055 in 1800 and built a fine house on it.

A portrait of John Morris in a gilt frame (dated 1783) was at 101 Enys Road, Eastbourne in the 1950s (presumably owned by Ellen I.Gilbert) and at 56 Milton Rd. in the 1970s. It was donated to the Sussex Archaeological Society by Richard Gilbert in 1979.
Died; 21 October 1822.

1752-1826 JOSEPH MORRIS

Born; 22 June 1752, All Saints parish, Lewes.
Parents; Joseph Morris (1717-1795) = Sarah Weller (1720-1789)
Married; Ann Shoosmith (1762-1833) 18 December 1781 at Laughton (two months after Ann's parents had got married! Only then did her father grant his consent to her marriage).
Children; Ann (1782-1805), Joseph (1784-1845), Sarah (1786-1864), Elizabeth (1788-1874), Hannah (1790-1866), Mary (1792-1869), Martha (1793-1851), William (1795-1815), Rebecca (1797-1848), Benjamin (1799-1877), Ebenezer (1801-1888), Deborah (1803-1841).

Occupation; Butcher in Lewes.
Joseph was one of the first trustees of the Jireh Chapel, Lewes, opened by preacher William Huntington in 1805.

In 'The Village of the Buckle' (book about Laughton) it says on page 61 "...by his will..1810 Wm.Shoosmith of All Saints, Lewes, gentleman, devised Stone Cross and other lands at Laughton to his grandson Joseph Morris the younger." This presumably refers to Stone Cross Farm, which lies about 1 mile east of Laughton on the south side of the Golden Cross - Laughton road, just off the A22.
East Sussex Record Office AMS 5569/7 is a letter dated 23 June 1825 from Joseph Morris, Lewes, to W.Hudson Esq., Whitely Wood near Sheffield, addressed to "My dear old friend and good soldier of Jesus Christ". Joseph apologises for a lapse in their correspondence upon which Hudson had commented in his letter to Mrs.Fuller. A severe period of illness suggests that his death is near.
Died; 5 November 1826.
Buried; All Saints, Lewes. There is a large tomb in All Saints churchyard containg the remains of Joseph and his wife Ann, and more than 40 other Morris relatives.
East Sussex Record Office AMS 5569/8 is a biographical note by Richard Gilbert (1894-1988) on Joseph Morris.

Born; 10 June 1756.
Parents; Joseph Morris (1717-1795) = Sarah Weller (1720-1789)
Married; (1) John Marsh.

Married; (2) Richard King, banker of Lewes.
Children; (King) Three sons and one daughter.

1762-1833 ANN MORRIS (nee SHOOSMITH)

Born; 8 Apr 1762.
Baptised; 5 May 1762, Laughton.
Parents; Base-born (and only) daughter of William Shoosmith jnr. (1732 Laughton - 1815 Lewes) and Elizabeth Ranger (1742 South Malling - 1807). They did eventually marry, but not until 18 October 1781, two months before Ann married Joseph Morris. Only then did William grant his consent for Ann to marry.
Details of William Shoosmith's ancestors dating back to 1575 (all at Laughton) available in Ash Emery's book "The Shoosmiths of Laughton".

The 1851 Census shows a Ranger family living at Laughton Place.

Charles Wille (1797-1878) notes in his diary for 22 March 1833 "Mrs.Joseph Morris senr. died yesterday".
