Born; 22 June 1752, All Saints parish, Lewes.

Married; Ann Shoosmith (1762-1833) 18 December 1781 at Laughton (two months after Ann's parents had got married! Only then did her father grant his consent to her marriage).

Joseph was one of the first trustees of the Jireh Chapel, Lewes, opened by preacher William Huntington in 1805.

In 'The Village of the Buckle' (book about Laughton) it says on page 61 "...by his will..1810 Wm.Shoosmith of All Saints, Lewes, gentleman, devised Stone Cross and other lands at Laughton to his grandson Joseph Morris the younger." This presumably refers to Stone Cross Farm, which lies about 1 mile east of Laughton on the south side of the Golden Cross - Laughton road, just off the A22.
East Sussex Record Office AMS 5569/7 is a letter dated 23 June 1825 from Joseph Morris, Lewes, to W.Hudson Esq., Whitely Wood near Sheffield, addressed to "My dear old friend and good soldier of Jesus Christ". Joseph apologises for a lapse in their correspondence upon which Hudson had commented in his letter to Mrs.Fuller. A severe period of illness suggests that his death is near.
Died; 5 November 1826.
Buried; All Saints, Lewes. There is a large tomb in All Saints churchyard containg the remains of Joseph and his wife Ann, and more than 40 other Morris relatives.

1762-1833 ANN MORRIS (nee SHOOSMITH)

Born; 8 April 1762.
Baptised; 5 May 1762, Laughton.
Parents; Base-born (and only) daughter of William Shoosmith jnr. (1732 Laughton - 1815 Lewes) and Elizabeth Ranger (1742 South Malling - 1807). They did eventually marry, but not until 18 October 1781, two months before Ann married Joseph Morris. Only then did William grant his consent for Ann to marry.
Details of William Shoosmith's ancestors dating back to 1575 (all at Laughton) available in Ash Emery's book "The Shoosmiths of Laughton".

Inherited Stone Cross Farm, Laughton, from his grandfather (William Shoosmith) who died in 1815.

Married; Cleeve Jehohanan Hooper (15 May 1791 Ringmer - 20 February 1836 East Hoathly) on 21 September 1813 at All Saints, Lewes. Cleeve was the son of Cleeve Hooper and Mary Woodward. He was also the cousin of Thomas Hooper who married Mary's sister Martha, and was apprenticed to a tanner and leather factor of Long Lane, Bermondsey.

Married; Thomas Hooper (11 November 1793 Ringmer - 12 October 1844 Bermondsey) at All Saints, Lewes on 11 June 1816. Thomas was the son of Thomas Hooper and Mary Gouger. He was the cousin of Cleeve Hooper who married Martha's sister Mary.

Rebecca was a witness at the marriages of her brothers Benjamin Morris (1799-1877), and Ebenezer Morris (1801-1888), and her sister Deborah Morris (1803-1841), all at South Malling Parish Church, Lewes. At the 1841 Census the family was living at Prospect House, East Hoathly. John was a goldsmith, aged 46.
At the 1851 Census the family was living at Prospect House, East Hoathly. John was a farmer of 120 acres, aged 55, widower.

In the 1861 Census shown as master butcher, Friar's Walk, Lewes, widower, aged 61.
In the 1871 Census shown as butcher employing 2 men and 2 boys, Friar's Walk, Lewes, widower, aged 71.
Appears to have handed on the business to his son Thomas.
Died; 19 April 1877.

1801-1888 EBENEZER MORRIS

Ebenezer Morris.

Born; 7 October 1801, St.Michaels, Lewes.
Baptised; 22 January 1802, Jireh Chapel, Lewes.
Parents; Joseph Morris (1752-1826) = Ann Shoosmith (1762-1833)
Married; Jane Elizabeth Berry (20 November 1802 South Malling - 31 December 1874 Lewes) at South Malling Parish Church on 17 (or 24) Feb 1824. Jane was the daughter of James Berry (died 20 October 1847) and Harriot Steel. Witnesses were James Berry, Sarah Berry, Rebecca Morris and Thomas Tinsley.
Children; Ebenezer (1824-1899), Joseph (1826-18??), James Berry (1828-1901), Mary Jane (1829-1903), Benjamin (1831-18??), Lydia-Ann (1832-1897), Sarah (1834-1912), Stephen (1836-1890), Isaac (1839-1896), Ruth (1841-1928), Hannah (1843-1930), Cornelius (1845-1877), John (1847-1892).

Born in Lewes and founded a flourishing ironfoundry business there from the 1820s, later opening a branch in Eastbourne.
Prominent member of the Conservative Party, and mixed with M.P.s and landed gentry.
Lived at 41 & 42 Cliffe High Street, Lewes, buildings which incorporated house, shop, offices and works. He was involved with the Gas and Water Companies (chairman of both at his death), and the extension of the railway system, chairman of the Lewes Conservative Association, chairman of the Poor Law Guardians, and senior trustee and deacon of the Jireh (Calvinistic) Chapel.

Died; 10 October 1888.
Suffered an attack of acute bronchitis and, although attended by Dr.Smythe, died on the morning of Wednesday 10 October 1888 at his home at Cliffe, Lewes, which he had occupied for 65 years.
The funeral took place at the family vault in All Saints Churchyard, Lewes, at 12 o'clock on Monday 15 October 1888. An obituary and a report of the funeral including a long list of the mourners is in Ellen I. Gilbert's newspaper cuttings album Page 140, c/o H R Gilbert.

Married; Henry Ebenezer Berry (18 May 1806 South Malling - 7 July 1859 Lewes) on 2 (or 21) May 1827 at South Malling Parish Church. Henry was a maltster of Ringmer, the son of Thomas Berry and Elizabeth Adams. After Deborah's death he married again and continued to live in Ringmer.
